This location overlooks Idylwilde dam, originally built in 1915 to provide water for
the operation of the City of Loveland's new hydropower project. The power plant
that received this water was completely destroyed by a flood in 1976 and
was subsequently rebuilt. For more information about hydropower and the fate of the
original generator visit the hydropower plant at Viestenz-Smith Park.
Today, the rest area at Idylwilde dam includes facilities maintained by the City
of Loveland Parks Department and provides a place to take a break and enjoy some of
the recreational opportunities provided by the River.
The most obvious recreational activity is fishing. The Big Thompson River supports
large numbers of local anglers, outfitters, tackle shops and a significant part of the
tourism industry - all dependent on clean water in our lakes and streams.
Occasionally, groups of experienced kayakers enjoy the challenge that the Big
Thompson canyon presents. The rushing water, streamside plants and animals, and the
changing horizons are also important to those who come to picnic, stroll, or wade the shallows.
Clearly, the quality of all these recreational experiences is directly related to the
quality of the water that supports them. |
