The Silver Lake
Homeowners Association has been active in monitoring and protecting
the quality of water in their lake.
As soon as the need was recognized for action, a homeowners survey
was conducted to assess the homeowners priorities for action.
Current projects include:
-
Water Quality Monitoring:
Secchi depth, dissolved oxygen,
nutrients, bacteria (E.coli), algae, and other parameters are
measured regularly. Colorado State
University's watershed department
has provided students to perform the water sampling procedures.
-
Solar Bee:
To alleviate persistent problems with algal blooms and fish kills,
presumably caused by excessive nutrient inputs, the homeowners
banded together to purchase and install a solar-powered water
circulator, the Solar Bee, in June 2003. Visit
www.solarbee.com for more information.

The Solar Bee is lowered
into Silver Lake before being towed to the lake center
where it uses solar power to circulate the water in the
lake.
