The Small Lakes Focus Group (SLFG) was started in 1998 at a Big
Thompson Watershed Forum (BTWF) meeting when representatives
from Silver Lake
requested help for the Silver Lake Homeowners Association in
preventing fish kills and algae problems. At that meeting,
action was taken to form a Small Lakes Focus Group (SLFG).
See the
November 27, 2000
issue of the Big
Thompson Watershed News for a detailed history of the
formation of the SLFG.
The goals of the Small
Lakes Focus Group were:
-
improve
the environmental quality of Silver Lake,
-
develop
a manual of procedures and guidelines for the
assessment and remediation of environmental quality
problems in small lakes of the Big Thompson
Watershed,
-
assess
and identify environmental conditions at Silver Lake,
-
develop
and implement rehabilitation measures and Best Management
Practices for Silver Lake,
-
document
the process,
-
make
recommendations and guidelines for the
assessment and rehabilitation of other small lakes in the Big
Thompson Watershed.
The
SLFG worked with three lakes in Loveland, Colorado:
Silver Lake,
Houts Reservoir and Equalizer Lake.
The SLFG included regular water quality monitoring
from 2001 to 2007.
The parameters measured included Secchi depth, dissolved oxygen,
nutrient levels, temperature, algal population by species, E.coli
count and others. |
